Throughout the years of politics, especially with the recent tensions in America, it’s quite evident the term “White Privilege’’ has aroused. This term has many different meanings. Some consider this as more opportunity as a basis of your skin color, while others strongly despise this idea, claiming it has no statistical evidence to justify it. Democrats consider white privilege as a psychological feeling. A majority of the party assumes that the idea of knowing that they are white creates a stronger mindset and allows them to have an advantage in the private sector. We often hear the assumption that a person of color is targeted through systematic racism, stripped opportunity, and police brutality. Democrats see this as addressing racial inequality that has been long evident in our nation’s economy. Statistics such as the fact that an African American is five times more likely to be arrested is a common piece of evidence that Democrats proudly use. Their analysis and perspective is that this proves the idea of systematic racism, and the ability to retain a sense of dignity and power in a society based on your skin color, which in this case is white. Individual cases of police brutality, and the severity of the situation, allow liberals to characterize an entire system based on a particular incident. They push the narrative that police and law enforcement specifically target people of color, and the fact that white people aren’t subjected to the same threat is the “privilege” which their communities strongly retain. Conservatives have an entire polar opposite perspective. Many strongly believe this notion of white privilege is racist, divisive, and just inherently false. The first, most clear example is the prominent question of “what can a white person do that a black person can’t?” Republicans claim that in the private sector, the only factors of opportunity that matter are education, ability to connect, and hard work. Republicans believe that regardless of skin color, an individual who makes good choices is rewarded. They also strongly reject the notion of police brutality and systemic racism. A common statistic that they use is that 40% of white males are arrested by age 23. While that number is nearly 10 percent more with respect to African Americans, this statistic refutes the claim that white privilege is rooted into our societies. Conservatives also use the fact that an immense number of elite universities in America give African Americans and other minorities a higher chance of admissions, just on the basis of skin color. Since it’s solely based on skin color and not credentials, conservatives use this as an example of racism as well. They consider it as no different if white people are discriminated against as well. Addressing a certain set of assumptions to an entire community of race, which can be applicable to every human, is by itself racist and divisive. This, in fact, that belief, is an example of anything but whit privilege. They consider it as hardcore evidence that white privilige doesnt exist, but rather African American or “minorial” privilege. Most on the right to acknowledge different examples of social injustice an depxloataiton, all the way from slavery in the 19th century to segragation in the 20th century. The topic on which they disagree the most with the left is that instead of complaining about a certain disadvantage a community may have, our government should take a systematic effort to reform these communities and discover the core root of this problem that politicians have been trying to tackle for decades now. Specific policies that their party has implemented in prison reform, a tax distribution which redirected billions of tax dollars to the African American community, and an increased funding to historically black universities.
